| Twirled for 4 years as a member of the Kailua High School Majorettes and Flag Twirlers and in her senior year was selected captain. During her tenor the team won many 1st and 2nd place awards in the Aloha Week and Fourth of July Parade competitions. Her mission is to give back to students what baton twirling has given her in the areas of skill, discipline, self confidence and a healthy sense of social and individual responsibility. You will see Sassafras "Get-Twirl Hawaii" baton corps volunteering at local community, public and private events. She says, "I am absolutely honored to be working with such awesome youth and adults and delighted to be a pioneer in returning the sport of baton twirling to the Sate of Hawaii! |


| VOLUNTEER CONSULTANT - Riina Roach Riina began baton twirling at the inquisitive age of three. She has twirled competitively for over 20 years. She is a member of PLMBA, one of the finest and largest Baton Twirling Associations in Japan. Sassafras "Get-Twirl Hawaii" is happy and proud to have “Coach Riina” as our Volunteer Consultant. We look forward to her new coaching ideas and techniques. While practicing at PLMBA, she also coached competitive twirling for local youth at Tokyo Athletic Club and PL Kanagawa MBA. She came to Hawaii in 2006 to become the Head Coach and Event Manager for another baton school in Hawaii and was there until May, 2008. She also participated in the USTA 2007 Regional Competition in Hayward, CA. where she twirled her way into two, 1st place awards (twirling two batons at the same time). The team she coached and chaperoned at that time also twirled themselves into second place team performance and her team members also placed in individual solos. Besides competitions she performed at many events in Japan, some of her most memorable are Tokyo Disney Land and the International Sports Fair in Tokyo. Here in Hawaii she participated in many local events, you might have seen her in the Aloha Festival Parade, Kamehameha Day Parade, or performing on stage at Kahala, Windward or Pearlridge Malls - Center Stage and even in Maui. (We think she likes traveling). Professional Accomplishments: • Baton twirling instructor’s license (level 1) with Japan Marching Band and Baton Twirling Director’s Association. • License and certified in childcare (Kindergarten) • Competed in the All Japan Baton Championship, Kanto (Tokyo Area) Region Solo. Contest and PLMBA Championships where her specialty is Two Baton, and she was also a member of their winning team. |

Meredith as been twirling baton since 2001. She is the inspiration behindSassafras "Get-Twirl-Hawaii". She has assumed coaching and choreography responsibilities since 2006. Professional accomplishments; Twirltacular All Stars 2008 solo, 1st place Novice Division age 13-15 (Dance Twirl) 2008 Team member of Get-Twirl Hawaii, 1st and 2nd Place Dance Twirl 2006 Twirltacular Extravaganza, Team member of Sassafras Twirlers 1st place themed performance Sassafras was also awarded the prestigious "Sportsmanship" award! |
Volunteer Consultant Melinda Monks Melinda Monks joins the Sassafras "Get-Twirl Hawaii family. She is thrilled to be twirling once again after taking a few years off to have her lovely children, Jack (age 3) and future twirler Emily (age 1) and we are just as excited to have her here twirling with us. Originally from West Virginia, Melinda was a majorette and feature twirler throughout Junior High and High School. She twirled and danced competitively in the 90’s, and was a member of West Virginia University’s “Pride of West Virginia Mountaineer Marching Band – Colorguard.” She also coached a high school colorguard and winterguard unit in Maryland, and twirled her way through the Miss West Virginia and Miss Maryland Scholarship Pageants Systems.
